Ok this was a sweet project 2 years in the making! We had tried both salt and sugar scrubs all made with oils….It was a sure way to end in a fall in the shower and what a mess. So as always it had to be the RAD Way! We wanted a sugar scrub that exfoliated, moisturized, lathered and cleaned getting it all done with a single product. Trying to do that was an incredible challenge for a whole host of reasons and trying to do it with all natural products doubled down on the difficulty. So for two years we would try formulas and every try got us closer to success in the infamous words of Thomas Edison ““I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that it won’t work.”. So in March of 2014 we had our Eureka Moment and we had created a new category in the world of body care. The Shuga Bub a body exfolient that would be unlike the status quo in the world of body skin exfolient.

You know we like a challenge!  So when Brewer Ommegang decided to turn their Abbey Ale and Three Philosophers into a soap…yes soap we were RADtastically excited. Traveling to Cooperstown to see the European styled brewery was a real high for the RAD team and the fact that founder Zak Kerber is a huge Craft Beer advocate and Ommegang is in his top three brews.
Abbey was Ommegang’s first beer and was styled after Dubbels produced by Belgian Trappist monks. A deep, rich and malty ale, Abbey uses several Belgian specialty malts and spices resulting in a very aromatic, flavorful beer.

Abbey Ale Hot Process Soap

Abbey Ale Hot Process Soap

Deep burgundy in color, topped by a dense tan head, Abbey Ale is rich on the palate but with a dry finish. Suitable for cellaring, Abbey develops wonderful caramel, fig, and currant notes with age.

Three Philosophers is a unique blend of a Belgian-style dark ale and Liefmans Kriek, an authentic cherry ale from Belgium. Cherry chestnut in color, it’s opaque but not cloudy with full carbonation topped by a smooth, tan head. Flavors and aromas of roasted malt, molasses and brown sugar, dark fruits, brandied raisins and chocolate, Three Philosophers has notable sweetness with low hop bitterness. The mid-palate shows a soft malt center which gives way to a dry, warm, wine-like finish.  IMG_2215

The complexity of this beer make it a good candidate for ageing gracefully, as spicy sherry and port notes should intensify.

There used to be two Kingdoms – animal & plants. RAD continues to expand its product line using the ever-promising family of Kingdom #5, known as the mushroom.   We call the newest addition to the RAD family Zoku, a Sino-Japanese term meaning tribe, clan, or family.

This product is the creation of our son Zak.  We introduced it earlier this year at the Herkimer Community College Holiday Event.  It won RAD Soap its second Blue Ribbon honor among 200 plus entries.  Last year, the Blue Ribbon was awarded to RAD’s Chaga body cream.

Because it always about the epidermis we look for the skin wow factor and as company practice we always talk to our suppliers to find out what is new and cutting edge so we can bring it to our most cherished RADsters. Earlier this summer in walks in one of our cherished mushroom harvesters with a haul of goodies and a discussion among friends led to the Birch Polypore.   Like Chaga, it too grows on Birch, living or dead so making a new product using the Birch Polypore was a perfect addition to the RAD family.

Birch Polypore it Gets under Your Skin!

Birch Polypore it Gets under Your Skin!

Birch Polypore’s main claim to fame is that it was found among the possessions of Oetzi, the mummified Stone Age man from 5,300 years ago whose remains were found in 1991 in a glacial ice cave on the border of Italy and Austria. The general consensus is that Oetzi the Iceman used the Birch Polypore against an infection of the intestinal parasite Trichuris trichuria, of which eggs were found among his remains.

But what intrigued us most about this new mushroom was the presence of a compound called Betulinic Acid.  The mushroom extracts and concentrates it making the Birch Polypore a great product for body care.  Betulinic acid causes advantageous apoptosis or programmed cell death. A melanoma study conducted in 1995 showed that Betulinic Acid was toxic to malignant melanoma cells without affecting healthy cells.  Two other studies from 1997 found that certain compounds extracted from Birch Polypore were anti-inflammatory and specifically helped reduce skin inflammation.

Zoku has both raw & unrefined cocoa butter and shea butter which have many nutritive benefits for your skin. The carrier oils we use with our other mushroom products include Virgin hemp and Zoku is no exception but this time we added something new to our arsenal of skin moisturizers – apricot oil.  It absorbs easily into the skin and will Apricot oil is often used in commercial face lotions because of its anti-aging properties. In addition, it’s proven to reduce bumps and red marks on the skin and can be used to treat sunburn, razor burn, eczema and psoriasis.

The newest RAD scent is a complex blend of Botanical scents & Essential Oils of Razor Strope & vanilla, clove, lavender and orange blossom. It’s quickly becoming a favorite at the farmers markets and festivals.

Zoku comes in a Luxurious Body Cream with two big RAD Bars of Soap. One is a body bar and the other is an exfoliating bar made with Israeli Dead Sea Salts.  All Zoku products are available for sale on our website.

RAD’s Tea Party Pink Body Cream is another RADtastic combination of botanical extractions that get the job done. If there were a Wonderland, Alice, the White Rabbit, Madd Hater and the Queen of Hearts would have it in their homes, burrows or castles! The combination of White Teas, Pomegranate and Hibiscus create the body ‘elixir of youth’.

RAD’s Tea Party Pink Pomegranate & Hibiscus Body Cream in a Pump!

This luxurious body cream is a complex blend of plant life and high leveled antioxidants (of course). With its Non-GMO Rice Bran Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil and Safflower Seed Oil just to name a few, we ensure a sumptuous body softener.
With the addition of the organics and botanicals of Hibiscus and Pomegranate this new body cream has a sort of magical effect on the skin. Because of its natural source of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), the Tea Party Pink Body Cream is delightfully conditioning! AHAs are known to help exfoliate skin, speed up cell turnover, and help control acne breakouts, all of which can encourage fresher, younger, and smoother looking skin. They also increase moisture and improve flexibility and elasticity—the reason why hibiscus called the Botox plant.
The AHAs not only protect the skin from free radical damage, but have astringent properties that help pores to appear smaller. They also have an anti-inflammatory effect which soothes inflamed skin and helps calm conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
Oh but that’s not all! Pomegranate is rich in ingredients such as vitamins B5 and C and contains punicic acid, an omega 5 conjugated fatty acid, which is effective in cell regeneration and proliferation. This considerably delays the process of aging. Moreover, it is also rich in compounds such as phytoestrogen and a rare plant-based source of CLA. This helps prevents the formation of scars by regenerating tissues in the affected area.

If there is a Wonderland, the journey begins with this thoughtful and well formulated body cream that you can only find at RAD Soap!

Attention RADsters: This is an apology and a product information update.

If you’re a RADster, you know that we have been selling mushroom teas for 3 years. During that time we have learned a whole lot about our fungi friends. Despite the overwhelmingly positive response we received to the products, we waited to expand the line for a number of reasons. We are dedicated to releasing only the best products and it took time for us to better understand the complicated kingdom of the fungi. The good news is, these delays have now been resolved.

Giant Chaga

Giant Chaga

During the few years since the initial release of the RAD mushroom products, we have been researching and experimenting with the mushroom. We discovered that there were better ways to prepare the teas. Not only that, but the process for making a digestible tea from a spored mushrooms is entirely different from that of a gilled mushroom. So as we labored over the Chaga with chisels and ninja blenders, we realized through our exhaustion the need to revamp our process. We found a German company that helped us build what we now call RAD’s Mushroom Muncher. After a year of planning, the machine arrived here just 7 weeks ago and life at the RAD Soap Co. has improved drastically. Better yet, our mushroom products are better than ever.

Secret Mushroom Muncher

Secret Mushroom Muncher

We worked with the engineers to create blades that would address the different consistencies of the mushroom textures. Then we created cutting systems for those surfaces, enabling a perfect grind that will allow maximum exposure of the surfaces to the distilled waters. After the Mushroom Muncher arrived we tested the teas that were made the old fashion way against the teas made with our new method and the Wonka Ultra Secret Gobstoper Machine (patent pending). The results were more than impressive. We successfully developed a method for creating a new level of quality in the mushroom body product line. These products are now being delivered to our online and market customers. Any products purchased from our mushroom lines as of October 25, 2013 will be unmatched by any other product in the industry.

Delays in the delivery of our Mushroom Teas and infrequent availability of the products are now over (cue cheering!). A big shout out to our local foragers who stepped up the harvesting and supply to enable us to consistently distribute to our loyal customers.

A New Look

A New Look

As a thank you for your loyalty and patience, and due to our new method of production, we are happy to announce that the mushroom teas are now being offered at a more affordable price. With an updated look and informative label, it would be a crime to miss the rerelease of the mushroom teas! Find them at RADsoap.com!

The decision to expand our business to include retail came at the end of 2012.  We knew our concept had to be true to our company name.  It would have to be uniquely RAD, representative of who we are and what we stand for as a company and most importantly, it had to be fun. sue&Georgie

Since the inception of the company, we have spent a great deal of time thinking about a retail concept that would carry the theme of our brand while staying away from the traditional same old same old boring approach.  For the company who makes hot process soaps using Chaga mushroom, hemp, coffee, beer and wine, our desire to find something new and edgy is what kept the wheels turning.  It would have to incorporate the most important aspects of the RAD Soap philosophy, factory process, and most importantly our fun loving and loyal customers we call RADSTERS.  With this idea in mind, we turned down some tempting offers from a few major retailers.  We were committed to waiting for the perfect retail partners to introduce our concept, RAD FACTORY PUNK, to the world. ( See Display here)

RAD Factory Punk

RAD Factory Punk

On December 03, 2012 our patience was rewarded with an opportunity that many small businesses dream about.  It came in the form of a phone call from one of Whole Foods body care buyers & team leaders, members of the Whole Body team from Ridgewood, NJ.  After hanging up the phone, Greg, Zak and I excitedly turned our focus to retrace our many visits to New York City where we had searched for the perfect partner to turn factory punk into a reality.  New York is undoubtedly home to some of the most creative talent in the world.  The best of the best move to New York to pursue their dreams – right?  Well, take a look at the attached photographs and we think you’ll agree that is not always the case.

One January afternoon, we decided to take a break from making soap and took a drive to visit Albany’s warehouse district where we met Fred and Jaime from Silver Fox Salvage.  We not only found our vintage picture frames but connected with a rare gem of an artist named Jaime Walton.  Jaime appears to be a true Southern gentleman and after spending time with him, he most definitely is.  Lucky for us, he chose not to stay in the South.  He moved to Albany a couple of years ago from out west.  We hope Jaime decides to make Albany his permanent home.

The mission of Silver Fox Salvage is to rescue old Victorian and Arts & Crafts style homes, churches, schools, barns and all salvageable structures really.  What comes next is their journey to preserve the pieces, find out about and tell as much of the story behind them as possible.  Silver Fox is so passionate about what they do that it started a separate company to oversee the entire demolition and deconstruction process.  These salvaged materials serve as the inspiration and building blocks to create one of a kind works of art including antique & vintage lighting, stained glass, doors, mantles and hand crafted furniture pieces.  Silver Fox is open to create just about anything for your home or business – just stop in and say hello.

True to the spirit of the creative process, Jaime searched the warehouse looking for materials to inspire the actual construction of the display.  In addition to his raw talent and passion for woodworking, Jaime says you have to respect the material and be open to where it may take you.  The display you see here is Jaime’s over the top brilliant execution of what we call and will forever be known as RAD FACTORY PUNK.IMG_1109

With the exception of a couple of shelving brackets, the materials used in the display are salvaged pieces from upstate New York:

  • The wood shelves are from Miller Dairy Farm – Troy, NY.  Jaime personally deconstructed every piece of this barn.
  • The metal piping is from the Rotterdam, NY US Army Depot circa 1940’s taken from a fire sprinkler system.
  • The structural backing is the original tin used in the construction of the Russell Green Barn built in 1943.  Russell is a small rural upstate NY town with a population of less than 2,000 people.
  • The lower cabinet is made from materials salvaged from Wagar Brothers, a working family farm from 1890 to 1956 – Brunswick, NY.
  • The ornate trim on each side of the lower cabinet is well over 100 years old.  It was rescued from a late 1800’s Victorian era stove.

We knew we had accomplished our goal of new and edgy but we also suspected the probability for success was going to take some twists and turns.   So when Whole Foods requested a peek at the design, I attached it to an e-mail summarizing the evolution of RAD FACTORY PUNK, closed my eyes and hit the send button.

Thankfully, Whole Foods loved the display as much as we did.  After making some minor adjustments, it was ready for prime time.  We are so proud to make our debut at Whole Foods Market in Ridgewood, NJ.  We invite you to stop in and experience the original RAD FACTORY PUNK display and be sure to say hello to the Whole Body Team.  We promise the experience will be unforgettably RAD!

We at RAD Soap Co are very grateful to Whole Foods Market for their uncompromising support of small local businesses throughout the United States of America and for empowering its team members at the individual store level to do the same.

RAD Soap moving into Whole Foods. We are very excited about the news that we will be selling RAD Soap in Whole Foods Ridgewood New Jersey next month.

They found us at the Troy Farmers Market on December 1st 2012 when a Whole Foods Team Member was visiting her brother and they decided to do some shopping at Upstate New York’s most famous farmers market.

We are excited and want to Thank all of those people who were talking up RAD Soap not knowing they were talking to a Whole Foods decision maker at the soap table that cold day on December 1st.  As well the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is truly a incubator of economic growth for farms and small businesses in upstate New York.  RAD will always be in the Troy Market no matter what…PROMISE!

We were contacted on December 3rd which is my birthday to start the application process and a day I will always remember. Also you know we could not do something hohum so Whole Foods has allowed us to create our own retail display. It will be our own design called RAD Factory Punk. We will have a complete story on it and will be the new look for RAD. So onward we go and THANKS RADsters for your support you are the best customers in the world and our success is your success.
